Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the difference between an aeration system and a septic system?
An aeration system is a more efficient form of treatment. It uses aerobic bacteria to treat the wastewater, much like municipal sewer plants. An aeration system can handle waste from laundry, garbage grinder and dishwasher, unlike a septic tank.

Q. What maintenance does an aeration system need?
With an aeration system, there is maintenance required to keep the system running normally every 6 months. The normal service is to clean the motor shaft of hair lint and debris to protect the motor bearings. Clean the inside of the shaft to draw air needed for treatment and add chlorine tablets.

Q. Is the aeration system economical to operate?
A Jet plant typically costs the homeowner less to operate than his refrigerator, TV or most other major home appliances.

Q. How long does an aeration system last?
Aeration systems can be repaired unlike a septic tank. When a septic lateral field is bad, it must be replaced. With an aeration system, the motor can be replaced, and the unit can go on again. With proper care, aeration units can last the lifetime of the homes they serve.

Q. How often should I pump?
Pumping the system is recommended every 3-5 years to remove hair, plastic, and solids to restart the system.  Under certain circumstances, you may need to pump your tank more frequently.

Q. Can I use anti-bacterial soap?
Avoid harsh chemicals and cleaning agents, including antibacterial soaps. These products can disrupt the beneficial microbial population essential to proper operation. When maintained correctly, the system will remain odor-free and produce clear effluent. For detailed guidance, please refer to the Owner’s Manual.
